Tony Alamo

Tony Alamo was born June 4, 1941 in Isabela de Sagua, Cuba.  He fled his country in 1961 and arrived in Miami, Florida.  In 1963 he married his wife Maria, moved to Nevada, and in 1974, became a U.S. citizen.  Once settled, he and his wife passed on their strong belief and commitment to public education to their children who attended elementary through high school in the Clark County School District.  His son is now a prominent doctor in the community and his daughter is an administrative assistant for the Northeast Region.

Tony Alamo’s college education and U.S. citizenship was earned entirely through his own effort.  He is a passionate advocate of freedom, hard work, integrity and education.  His career in gaming began as a janitor for Harrah’s Hotel in Reno, Nevada.  Through hard work, a strong work ethic and dedication, Mr. Alamo worked his way up the corporate ladder.  He has been very successful in the gaming industry and is the top ranking Hispanic executive in gaming today.  Sharing his experiences with the community and individuals of all ages has been his way of giving back to society.  He has mentored and encouraged individuals to reach for success.

Mr. Alamo has demonstrated his strong commitment to education through scholarship donations to UNLV for the past fifteen years.  He has participated as a motivational speaker for the Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference at UNLV that was co-sponsored by the Latin Chamber of Commerce.  His formula for achievement is to develop a firm foundation of hard work, honor, and instill values to make solid and wise decisions.

He is an active member of several organizations in the Las Vegas community.  Mr. Alamo has served as a Commissioner on Tourism, an office appointed by the Governor of the State of Nevada, and was appointed by Senator Richard Bryan to serve on the selection committee for Military Academics. He currently serves on the board of the Clark County Public Education Foundation as well Mandalay Resort Group’s Diversity Committee. His awards include the Tourism Award, 1984, Hispanic of the Year Award, 1993, by the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce, the Community Hero award by the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) and Hotelier of the Year 2001 by the Nevada Hotel and Lodging Association. Mr. Alamo was also named one of the 50 most influential executives in 2001 by Business in Las Vegas, a Greenspun Media Group.

There is no greater tribute to the power of one’s beliefs than to unselfishly contribute, nurture, and take pride in the success of others.  Tony Alamo emulates the building blocks that form the foundation for our children’s education.  Honor, perseverance, caring, and dedication, along with a tenacity to build a future from almost nothing, is a testimony to his character as a community leader.
