They Said What?!

"Even when I'm old and grey, I won't be able to play it, but I'll still love the game."
-Michael Jordan

"I've always swung the same way. The difference is when I swing and miss, people say, 'He's swinging for the fences.' But when I swing and make contact people say, 'That's a nice swing.' But there's no difference, it's the same swing."
-Sammy Sosa

"There's no thrill like throwing a touchdown pass."
-Joe Montana

Arbor View's New Baseball
Coach is a Homerun

Coach Salazar (left) talks strategy with a player during recent practice

Arbor View’s varsity baseball team has been doing exceptionally well this year, not surprisingly due to their great team.  But what would a team be without its coaches?  This season is one full of new coaches, including Mr. Salazar Jr.

This year is Mr. Salazar’s first year as a coach at Arbor View.  He got involved in coaching after playing baseball himself for many years.  When the coach was no longer able to play, he figured the next best thing was to help others play.  Mr. Salazar says his favorite part about being a coach is being knowledgeable and being able to help players learn to play the right way.

This year, Mr. Salazar is new to not only coaching, but teaching as well.  “I love the interaction with the students.  It is a lot of fun since I am still young and can joke around and talk with the students,” says Mr. Salazar.   He hopes to be back at Arbor View next year as a full time teacher, and would love to coach if the position opens up.

Thanks to the constant support and help of the varsity baseball coaches, Arbor View’s team is really starting to peak.  They are currently number one in the division with hardly any losses all season.  The boys are aiming for playoffs.  With two of the players signed at UNLV and the seniors leading the way this year, that goal appears to be very reachable.

Overall, the coaches agree, this season has been even better than they had planned.  “The guys are going above and beyond,” says Mr. Salazar.  He hopes and expects that the team will just keep getting better and working on their game.

Athlete Spotlight
Kirby Mengert

Staff Writer

6’3’’ senior Kirby Mengert will be a valuable asset and team captain to Arbor View’s varsity volleyball team this year.     Going into his 3rd year on varsity and with an all-conference honorable mention, Kirby has both the skill and the experience to help the volleyball team have a successful season that hasn’t been seen since 2008 when the boys made it to the regional quarterfinals.    “We have high hopes for this year’s team,” said Mengert. “ Right now we're a lot stronger than we used to be.”
Kirby works hard both on and off the court training with his club team during the summer and fall while still maintaing a 3.4 GPA with difficult classes like Calculus, AP Government, and AP Lit and Comp. He is an active member of the Arbor View Student Council, is the Student Body Treasurer, and even has a job working at Golden Spoon.    Kirby says it can be difficult juggling all of these responsibilities. “There’s definitely conflicts,” he says, “I’ve had to miss practice for work and work for games.” However, Coach LaDouceur is confident in this well-rounded athlete’s abilities, saying, “We will go as far as Kirby will take us.”
