Children Succeed Through Parent/Guardian Involvement!

Being involved in your child's education at home is actually the BEST place to begin. The involvement of parents and guardians can lead to higher grades and test scores, long term academic achievement, and positive attitudes and behavior.

What can parents/guardians do on a daily basis?

* Encourage your child to develop a reading habit.
* Read to or with your child every day.
* Encourage independent reading every day.
* Make frequent trips to the library.

What else can parents/guardians do?

* Make learning relevant . Ask your child to do things such as count money, write grocery lists, calculate costs, read menus, read the newspaper, and write letters.
* Play games that help your child read and practice basic math facts and computations.
* Establish a routine for homework.
* Provide exposure to activities and experiences to broaden their understanding. Visit locations such as parks, museums, colleges, and local landmarks.
* Instill a love of learning by setting an example yourself. Enroll in a class, talk about educational issues, pay attention to school matters and issues, and get involved.
* Consider volunteering at school , even if just for an hour a week. You could assist in the cafeteria monitoring during lunch, or in the library, or even in a classroom. When your child
sees you involved at his or her school, he or she knows you care and are aware.
