Arturo Cambeiro, a successful architect, fled Cuba with his wife and small child in 1962 at the age of 29. They arrived, speaking no English, with nothing but the clothes on their backs. By December of that year, they joined other family members that had recently arrived in Las Vegas. Through hard work and diligence, he soon became the first architect licensed in the state of Nevada. A few years later he opened his own architectural firm working nonstop to become one of our most productive and respected citizens.
Mr. Cambeiro was past president and co-founder of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, a past president of the Las Vegas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, past chairman of the Nevada State Board of Architecture and was Small Businessman of the Year for the State of Nevada in 1979.
Besides serving as the principal architect for the Thomas & Mack Center, several Clark County fire stations, and two terminals at McCarran International Airport, the Arturo Cambeiro & Associates Ltd. Architecture and Engineering firm also designed several elementary schools along with numerous other projects.
He was an active community volunteer and dedicated himself to these endeavors with the same vigor he had exhibited in his business dealings. He always championed local Latinos and inspired many to work hard to achieve their goals.
Many of his family members still live in the Las Vegas Valley. They stand as a living legacy to his hard work and ethical lifestyle.
We are proud to bear the name of Arturo Cambeiro Elementary School. |
