Band

Well our "Sensational" Centennial Band Euphonium player Kirt Brannen did it again this past Thursday at the Nevada Music Educators Association Conference [NMEA] at UNLV. In addition to winning the principal chair in the All-State Band, Kirt beat out the rest of the competition in the state and won Command Performance in the caption of Brass Solo. This recognition is the ultimate award for the music student. In athletics, it would be comparable to Athlete of the Year.

Thousands of students from across the state auditioned for their respective captions starting on February 7th. In order to eligible to advance to the next round of auditions, students must receive a "Superior" rating which Kirt did on the district level. The next level of audition took place on the Southern Nevada Regional level. In order to advance to the State level, in addition to the "Superior" rating, students must receive an overall score in the top 5% of their classification, which Kirt did. This narrowed the competition field down to 4 student brass soloists in the state of Nevada [2 from up North, 1 from LVA & our very own Kirt Brannen].

Kirt was selected this past Thursday afternoon at the NMEA conference, performing his chosen music in front of an audience of approximately 2000 people at Ham Hall UNLV. Kirt's performance was met with an immediate standing ovation.

Congratulations to Stan Howard, bassoon & Kirt Brannen, Euphonium for being selected to the all-state band for Nevada. Stan Howard also receive;d a full scholarship on bassoon to Milikan University but will be attending Ithaca College [NY] on a bassoon scholarship in the Fall. Kirt Brannen is still a junior but plans on attending North Texas State University majoring in Euphonium Music Performance in the Fall of 2010.

Choir

Karen Miskell and Centennial's Chamber Singers
Thursday, 4/2/09, on the way to USC, we are stopping at Bonita High School in La Verne, CA to sing for and listen to their choirs; later that afternoon, we head to USC for a clinc with Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe (the head of Choral Activities at USC). Friday, 4/3/09, we spend the day on campus--the kids will have the opportunity to participate in a Q∧A session with current college students, they'll go on tours of the both the university and the music school, they'll get to observe a dress rehearsal of the USC orchestra and concert choir, and they'll attend a concert in the evening where they will get to hear an amazing University group--and they'll get to meet the composer of one of the songs they sang at festival! It's really an exciting opportunity for our students!

For more information, please contact Ms. Miskell.
