As Cunningham Elementary prepares for our yearly testing, we would like to let everyone know how important reading has become to our school. Our students are participating in a program called Accelerated Reading. AR, as we commonly call it, helps encourage students to continue reading. With each book read, students take a test in the computer lab or on the classroom computer through the AR program. The AR program keeps track of all the books read and all of the points each student earns. Students receive various prizes for earning points and their class earns rewards for total overall points as well.
All in all, the AR program has sparked a new interest in reading. We would like to recommend that parents help encourage students to continue reading at home by reading with your child for at least 20 minutes a day.
If you need suggestions for books to read to your child, try checking out our "iREAD" section of the webpage. Some of the teachers and staff members have compiled a list of books they enjoy and recommend to parents and students. If your child's teacher doesn't have a list posted, feel free to ask them for a recommended book list for your child to read. We are all working very hard to encourage students to continue reading, not only for the AR points, but simply for the enjoyment! |
