Biography:
Ms. Bernstein was born in Modesto, California, located in the Golden State’s Central Valley. She has resided in Las Vegas for many years, where she attended elementary, junior high, high school, and college. Ms. Bernstein is a proud graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Theatre Arts Program, where she was on a full Devos Performance Scholarship for four years. She is a trained singer and pianist, beginning her musical training at the age of five. She studied with Mr. Roger Bushell in Las Vegas, and Mr. Virko Baley at UNLV. While on scholarship at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Ms. Bernstein was the honored recipient of the American College Theatre Festival’s Supporting Actress Award for her role as Rossignol in “Marat/Sade” and was an American College Theatre Festival’s “Irene Ryan Acting Award “Finalist in the Southwest Region for her role as Bunny in “Where Has Tommy Flower’s Gone?” She began working professionally in college where she toured in many productions. Ms. Bernstein was a lead comedic actress for Breck Wall Productions for many years, and resided in New York City after graduating from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Performance. She has been a professional member of A.G.V.A, A.F.T.R.A., and Actor’s Equity, working in Atlantic City, Boston, Dayton, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. After many years of traveling and performing on the stage, Ms. Bernstein returned to Las Vegas, where she entered the first group of the Graduate Licensure Program at U.N.L.V. She began her teaching career doing her student teaching at Eldorado High School and was hired as the Theatre Director at Valley High School in 1994. Ms. Bernstein continued her educational training at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to complete her Masters of Education in Secondary Curriculum and Instruction in 1998, where her thesis was based on “Role-play across the Curriculum.” Ms. Bernstein was a graduate assistant in the Urban Teaching Partnership Program, and a teacher for the National Youth Sports Program at U.N.L.V. She took on the position of Theatre Director at Desert Pines High School in 1999, where she opened the new school. Under her guidance, the Desert Pines Theatre Program became an award –winning member of the Nevada Thespians. Ms. Bernstein was the Fine Arts Department Chair for eight years at Desert Pines. Ms. Bernstein has continued her educational studies at U.N.L.V. with doctoral classes. She has served on the Nevada Thespian State Board since 2004, and holds the position as Media and Scholarship Coordinator for the Board. She is a member of the Curriculum Writing Committee for Drama in the Clark County School District, and is an active professional member of the Educational Theatre Association, the Clark County Education Association, the Nevada Education Association, and the National Education Association. Ms. Bernstein is featured in the several publications: “The Who’s Who of American Teachers”, The Marquis Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who in America. She will be featured in the 2008-2009 Who’s Who of American Women. She has directed over forty productions and has hosted the Nevada Thespian Improvisation, Regional, and State Conferences. She is honored to have been named the Nevada Thespian Theatre Teacher of the Year at State Conference in March, 2008, and received the Clark County Education Association’s “Above and Beyond” Award at Green Valley Ranch in May of 2008, for her work with curriculum and diversity in the classroom. During October of 2007, Ms. Bernstein received a “Getting Excited about Education Award” from District D and Commissioner Weekly. Ms. Bernstein is very proud of her family. She is married to Mr. John Bernstein, a Senior Sales Executive with CBS Radio’s JACK FM and a professional motivational speaker. Her son Frankie Bernstein attended the Las Vegas Academy, and is a graduate of CalArts in Los Angeles, where he resides as a professional composer/musician.
