Tests are used to determine if students should be awarded a diploma, if students should be accepted into a particular college, and if a school is meeting State and National Standards. They are important.

Know the dates of tests and be sure your child attends school on those dates.

Provide a "good faith" effort to help your child prepare for these test by taking note of review sessions offered at DOHS and elsewhere, and use the information and sample tests provided on this website.

The State of Nevada has legislated that all students graduating from high schools in Nevada must pass proficiency exams in mathematics, reading, science, and writing. 11th and 12th grade students who have not passed one of the four tests or not taken NHSPE must take the tests when offered until they pass. Scores from other states do not replace the NHSPE.
NHSPE Passing Scores
Mathematics - 304 out of 500 (60.8%)
Reading - 251 out of 500 (50.2%)
Science - 300 out of 500 (60.0%)
Writing - 7 out of 12 (58.3%)

See the DOHS proficiency websites for more information on these exams.

The SAT and ACT are college entrance exams. One or both may be accepted, or required. Students should contact the Counseling office and look at the Counselor Information website for more information.

All students taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses are expected to take AP exams.
