Instruction Unit--School Safety Reminders
In
order to ensure the safety and well being of the students, faculty, staff and
visitors in our schools, building administrators are reminded to review all
emergency procedures with faculty and staff on a regular basis. The
following items are to be reviewed by school administrators immediately and
shared with faculty and staff during the month of August.
1.
During faculty
meetings, review safety and emergency procedures and accompanying
responsibilities.
2.
Review the site
Crisis Response Plan with teachers and staff including the responsibilities of
key personnel. This is especially
important when a change in personnel occurs at your site.
3.
Review off-campus
evacuation routes and locations to ensure suitability.
4.
Routinely check
the contents of emergency kits (main office, health office and classroom).
5.
Run drills with
faculty, staff and students beyond the regular fire, lock down, and
shelter-in-place drills.
6.
Run a variety of
drills to check that all personnel are fully aware of their responsibilities in
different scenarios.
7.
Rehearse
emergency code procedures.
8.
Implement a
notification/orientation process for substitutes and volunteers upon check-in
at your location so that they are knowledgeable of the emergency procedures.
9.
Ensure that
emergency procedures are clearly labeled and easily accessible to the required
personnel (i.e. faculty, staff, substitutes, volunteers, etc.) while remaining
secure to unauthorized personnel.
10.
Ensure that
faculty and staff are visible and out during passing periods and before/after
school.
11.
Be advised that
your school may be selected to participate in an unannounced site visit
simulation in the near future. These
simulations will provide feedback as to effectiveness of plans that are in
place and faculty/staff familiarity with their identified responsibilities.
12.
Create a culture
of awareness at your sites which includes willingness for all to immediately
report individuals, behavior or items that are not the norm.
13.
Remind and encourage
students to utilize the Student Crime Stoppers Hotline (799-0228) to
anonymously report crime prevention information.
14.
Ensure that all visitors have properly checked
into your site. Instruct staff to
question all visitors on school property as to the nature of their visit. Visitors are to be directed to the main
office in order to sign in and receive a visitor’s badge.
Thank you for your support
and commitment to the safety and well being of the students, faculty, staff,
and visitors of CCSD.
