After Lewis and Clark, the best known explorer of the American West is John C. Fremont (1813-1890.) A native of Georgia, Fremont became a lieutenant in the Army's Corps of Topographical Engineers in 1838. Between 1842 and 1853 he led five expeditions beyond the Rocky Mountains. The second (1843-1844) and third (1845-1846) took him into the area he named the Great Basin. Fremont described and named many features in what is now Nevada, including Pyramid Lake and the Carson and Walker Rivers. His reports (written with the help of his wife, Jessie Benton Fremont) brought attention to the Far West and inspired many Americans to move there.
