Third Grade

What a wonderful year we’re having in third grade! As you know, the third grade students are expected to read nightly and retell what they have read to a family member. Please ask them questions about what they have read. Spelling words are sent home at the beginning of the week and should be studied nightly in preparation for the Friday test. After winter break, multiplication will be emphasized; therefore students should be practicing their facts daily.
Every year, the third grade students have the opportunity to earn a social studies award, through a project called World Traveler. Students select a country in the world and research various items related to their chosen location. Half of the project is required and is completed for a grade in class. The other half is optional and is completed at home by the student. In order to receive the World Traveler award, the student must complete all pieces of the project. We will begin working on this project at the first of the year, and more information will be provided. The third grade teachers are excited to see how many students complete the following requirements:
In Class
* Correctly label and spell the seven continents and four oceans
* Restate Roger D. Gehring’s Mission Statement from memory
* Complete a poster on their country using print and non-print resources
* Complete a fiction book report from their country

At home
* Create a travel brochure on a different country (It has to be from a different continent than the one that was researched in class.)
