R. Guild Gray

Below is one of Dr. Gray's poems.

I knew a place upon a hill,
But it's no longer there.
Oh, yes the hill, but not the place,
The town is everywhere.
It fills the valley rim to rim
And covers up the hill,
Not even I can find it now
And no one every will.

I knew a place upon a hill,
It was a place for dreams.
It was a place for only one
And not for all it seems.
So when the man who was the boy
Is resting finally,
Forever lost the place will be
In even memory.

R. Guild Gray was born in Peoria, Illinois, on September 2, 1911, and grew up near Reno where his parents settled in 1913. The formal education of R. Guild Gray took place in the elementary and secondary schools in Reno, the University of Nevada, Stanford University, University of Southern California and the College of the Pacific.

R. Guild Gray was an educator, legislator, financial executive, outdoorsman and writer; the author has had a wide variety of experiences during his long career. Except for the first two years of childhood, a time at Stanford University from which he received the degree of Doctor of Education, and the years spent as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II, he lived and worked in the Great Basin.

His published writings include a few poems, numerous professional papers, and an historically slanted novel of early Great Basin cattle ranching - THE TREBLE V. For three years he authored a weekly newspaper column. In 1980 the R. Guild Gray Elementary School was named in his honor. In 1991 he was awarded the title of Distinguished Nevadan by the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada. In 1992, at the Nevada Humanities Committee annual awards ceremony, he was named Distinguished Nevada Educator and Humanist. R. Guild Gray was the first school superintendent in the Clark County School District.

The students, teachers, and citizens of Nevada are proud to have our school named for such an outstanding individual.
