SCHOOL POLICIES & EXPECTATIONS
2009-2010
Arrival and departure:
Students will not be allowed on campus until 8:45 a.m. when adult supervision begins.
All campus gates will be locked until that time. Drop-off of your student(s) should
be timed accordingly.
Attendances and Absences:
The Board of School Trustees and Nevada Revised Statutes require school
attendance. It is the position of the Board that if a student is absent, no learning
can take place. It is the parent’s responsibility to see that regular attendance is
maintained and that their child is on time to school each day. If a child has an
excessive number of absences, the parent/guardian will be notified, in writing, by
the school. An elementary student may be required to repeat the current grade if the total number of absences exceeds 20 for the school year. Please review the CCSD Attendance Policy for Elementary Schools that is in the Parent folder sent home during the first week of class.
Bike Riding:
For those students who ride bicycles to school, a locked bike rack is provided. Bikes
are to be locked in there during the school day. Parents need to provide the locks
for the bikes. The school is not responsible for any damage or loss of a bike. Bikes must be walked while on school grounds. Skateboards, roller blades or Heelies are not allowed on campus.
Class Parties:
Each room mother works with the teacher to organize 3 major class parties each
year: Halloween, Winter Celebration, and Valentines Day. No colored punch is
permitted. Please only bring in clear juices.
Students may bring treats for the entire class in recognition of their birthday. The
treats will be distributed at lunch or at the end of the school day. Private birthday
party invitations should not be distributed at school, unless the entire class is
invited.
Classroom Volunteers:
Classroom volunteers must be scheduled in advance with your child’s classroom
teacher. Upon arrival, parents must sign in at the front office and receive a
visitor’s badge. The teacher will then direct you on the specific activities. Please
remember that this is not a time to conference with the teacher about specific educational or personal questions. A conference should be scheduled outside of the instructional day. As adults, it is very important that we model school-wide expectations and dress code. We ask that volunteers follow the same basic dress code as staff and students.
Emergency Data:
The school office must have current home and emergency telephone numbers, along
with current addresses. It is essential to have this information in case of an
accident or illness. Please stop by the office and update any new information.
Enrollment and/or Withdrawal:
Students must officially enroll through the school office before they can attend class. An original birth certificate and current immunization records are required to attend a school in the CCSD. Proof of residency and updated health information are requested of all students on a yearly basis. Lost or missing textbooks, library books and lunchroom charges must be paid for on or before the student’s last day of school.
Homework:
Guidelines have been established for the assignment of homework at Gray Elementary. Students will have homework Monday through Thursday evening. These guidelines are included in the Back to School Parent Folder sent home during the first week.
Careful consideration has been given by teachers as to the type and amount of work assigned. Students in grades K-2 should expect 30 minutes of homework each night, while older students should expect to spend up to one hour of homework each night. Parents can expect homework each evening and should question their child if they do not have any. The homework should be content that is meant to emphasize or practice content that was taught in the classroom. Contact the classroom teacher if you have any questions.
Lunch:
Students can either bring a sack lunch from home or purchase a hot lunch from Food Services. Students need to bring money each day or establish a credit on their account. Charging is very limited.
Parental Concerns: We want everyone to be pleased and satisfied with every aspect of the
school operation. However, we know that on occasion you may have a concern. If the concern relates to your child, the first step is to contact your child’s teacher. A concern not related to your child should be brought to the building administrator.
Personal Belongings/Toys/Balls/Cellular Phones:
Students should not bring any toys or outside items to school. Property brought from home is at risk of being lost or misplaced and it may cause classroom disruptions. Items will be confiscated and/or returned to the parents, based on the discretion of the teacher and/or administrator. Parents are urged to put the student’s name on backpacks, coats and lunchboxes. The school district policy mandates that cellular phones must be turned off and cannot be used during the instructional day.
Principal Appointments:
We appreciate whenever parents are able to stop by and say Hello. We, also, like to give you our full attention on important matters, as we know your time is very valuable. As with any professional office, please schedule an appointment in advance so we may make you the first priority.
Progress Reports/Report Cards:
Progress reports will be sent home by each teacher on a routine basis. All progress reports require a parent signature and should be returned to the teacher. Report cards are issued on a trimester basis. Unsatisfactory notices are sent home half way through each trimester if a student is at-risk of dropping two or more grades or is currently failing in a content area.
School hours:
Morning Kindergarten 9:10 a.m. - 11:40 a.m.
Afternoon Kindergarten 12:50 p.m. 3:21 p.m.
Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 9:10 a.m. 3:21 p.m.
Student Tardy Procedure:
Students are expected to arrive promptly everyday. When students, arrive after 9:10 a.m., they must go to the office and receive a late pass in order to be admitted into class. If a student is continually tardy, a conference may need to be scheduled with the Administration.
Teachers’ Lounge:
On occasion, we realize that the volunteers need to overflow into the lounge to complete a project. As a courtesy to the teachers, we ask that all children remain outside of the lounge and that parent volunteers leave the lounge during the teachers’ lunchtime. This policy has been developed as a courtesy to staff. Thank you.
Teacher/Parent Conferences:
You will be asked to attend a formal conference with your student’s teacher before the end of the first trimester. An appointment time will be established to discuss your child’s progress. Please make every effort to attend the conference when they are scheduled. Other conferences may be requested at any time during the year, as needed.
Visitors/Visiting Students:
All visitors must report to the office. Individuals who wish to visit a classroom must make arrangements in advance with the teacher or the Administration. Children visiting your home from other areas are not allowed to attend class because of the liability involved. Thank you for your help in keeping all of our children safe. |
