Use Internet websites for help with math assignments When it comes to building your middle-schooler’s math skills, there are plenty of free, educational websites that can help. Ask your child’s math teacher for suggestions. But in the meantime, have your child try these:
- AAA Math www.aaamath.com. Easy to use, this site is full of solid information. Pages are divided by subject and grade level.
- Ask Dr. Math http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/drmath.middle.html. When Mom and Dad don’t know the answer, ask Dr. Math! Post a question or browse the archives. Chances are, someone’s asked your question before. The middle school section offers helpful reviews, too.
- CoolMath Algebra www.coolmathalgebra.com. “Bored with Algebra? Confused by Algebra? Hate Algebra? Yeah, we can fix that.” Or so this site promises—and delivers.
With splashy graphics and easy-to-use menus, CoolMath is great for kids and parents. Extra helpful is the section called “How to Study for a Math Test.”
- Frank Potter’s Science Gems—Mathematics www.sciencegems.com/math.html. This site is packed with great links to other sites. It covers math skills for all levels from grades four to six to advanced math topics such as trigonometry, calculus and statistics. It even lists a site with math problems that have never been solved.

www.nv.growparents.com
The website contains lots of good ideas and information for parents from The Grow Network. Parents receive reports from this network if their child is in 6th or 8th grade.
Reading: For parents, teachers, students, and librarians,Sylvan Learning recommends their Book Adventure website, which is similar to Accelerated Reading, and completely FREE.
This is to inform you that Instructional Materials for grades 3 - 8 for the reading and math CRT's are now available at the Nevada Department of Education web-site (www.doe.nv.gov). These materials can be accessed by clicking on the "assessment" link located on the Department of Education home page, followed by the "criterion referenced" link.
These materials should provide teachers and students with a better understanding of the design and complexity of the state criterion-referenced tests at grades 3 - 8. For each test, there is a letter of introduction and specific information pertaining to the grade level, and subject areas in terms of question types, cognitive ability levels, and specific information dealing with math content literacy, length of reading passages and reading genres.
