Safety and Security of Our Students
The safety and well being of Mervin Iverson students is extremely important. When students arrive on campus, they must feel they are safe and secure so they can focus on learning. Parents must be assured their child is safe and protected while attending school. A Safety Committee, represented by parents and Iverson staff, met in spring, 2009 to examine campus safety. The committee offered several recommendations to the Iverson staff, resulting in the following procedures:
Before School
The drop-off lane in front of the school will be closed to all vehicles from 8:00 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. The drop-off lane will be opened at 8:50 a.m. to allow cars to drop students off. Vehicles will not be allowed to park in the drop-off lane. Staff members and a student safety patrol will assist students safely to the playground. Parents/guardians who wish to walk their child(ren) to the campus gates must park in the parking lot. Parking for parents of kindergarten students will be expanded, allowing adequate parking for parents who would like to walk their child to the playground.
Parking for parents of 1st-5th grade students will be provided in the south section of the parking lot, with close proximity to a gate to the playground. Students may enter the campus at 8:50 a.m. Students are not to arrive on campus before this time as there is no adult supervision. Parents may sign their child up for Safekey if supervision is needed before 8:50 a.m. No visitors are allowed on the playground before school unless they obtain a visitor’s badge from the office or are safety volunteers. To become a safety volunteer, please call the office at 799-7260. NOTE: Visitors are allowed on the playground during the first week of school. The first bell rings at 9:00 a.m. Students will line up on their assigned dot. The tardy bell rings at 9:10 a.m. Afternoon kindergarten students may enter the campus at 12:35 p.m. The first bell rings at 12:45 p.m. and students are considered tardy after 12:50 p.m.
During School
All visitors (anyone not employed at Iverson) MUST obtain a visitor’s badge from the office when entering the school building or visiting the playground.
Students leaving campus early will only be released to adults listed on the child’s registration form.
Parents and visitors are encouraged to visit and volunteer on campus. However, all visits must be pre-arranged with the teacher.
After School
Morning kindergarten students are dismissed at 11:40 a.m.
The drop-off lane in front of the school will be closed to all vehicles from 2:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. The drop-off lane will be opened at 3:20 p.m. to allow cars to pick up students. Vehicles will not be allowed to park in the drop-off lane. Parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child(ren) on the playground must park in the parking lot. Parking Lot Map Students will be dismissed at 3:21 p.m.
All parents/guardians will be asked to provide, in writing, how the student will be exiting the campus. Parents/guardians will indicate whether the student rides a bus, walks to the Recreation Center, walks home, or waits for an adult to pick the student up.
The Iverson playground will be opened at 3:15 p.m. Parents/guardians are welcome on the playground to pick up their children.
All teachers will escort their students outside at 3:21 p.m. and will stay with the students until they are picked up by parents/guardians. If students are not picked up by 3:30 p.m., the teacher will escort the students to the office.
School Lunch
While some students bring lunch from home, the Clark County School District offers a hot lunch program. Lunch with milk costs $1.75. Breakfast costs $1.25. Individual milk costs $0.25. Students are asked to pay for lunches at least one week ahead of time. Students may also pay for lunches before school. Paying for lunch at lunchtime is discouraged. If a student has no lunch or money, he/she may charge only two lunches. Payment can be made either on-line, or by placing a check or cash in an envelope. More information regarding on-line payment may be obtained from our school website at: http://www.ccsd.net/schools/iverson.
