Experiment: Properties of Rhombuses

Objective

This experiment is designed to provide an interactive environment in which students can manipulate a rhombus to observe what properties remain the same among all rhombuses.

User´s Guide

By dragging any of the vertices of the rectangle, students can change the shape and the size:

  1. Drag the top or bottom vertices horizontally or vertically to change the shape and the size of the rhombus.
  2. Drag the left or right vertices horizontally to change the shape and the size of the rhombus.
  3. In addition, each of the slider bars can be used to scale the rhombus horizontally or vertically.
  4. The display of diagonals, angles, and related numerical information can be turned on and off as desired.

By changing the rhombus to any desired shape and size, students can discover and observe common properties among all rhombuses.

Suggested Experiments

  1. As you drag any of the vertices, observe the two diagonals. Are they perpendicular to each other all the time?
  2. Do the diagonals bisect each other?
  3. Can we change a rhombus into a square?
