DRESS AND APPEARANCE

Proper attire is to be worn to school by all students to foster the best learning environment. The CCSD dress code:

  1. Requires the wearing of shoes with soles.

  2. Prohibits crop tops (no skin showing between bottom of shirt/blouse and top of pants/skirts); strapless low-cut clothing with slits; or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage.

  3. Prohibits spaghetti straps; all sleeveless shirts must have straps at least three inches wide and cover the shoulder.

  4. Requires that all shorts, skirts and dresses must be fingertip length.  Shorts must be hemmed and without fraying.

  5. Prohibits the wearing of head gear on campus, except for designated school approved uniforms or at authorized athletic practices or activities.

  6. Prohibits slogans or advertising on clothing that by their controversial or obscene nature disrupts the educational setting.

  7. Clothing with spikes or studs is also prohibited.

  8. Coats, mittens and scarves must be removed upon entering the classroom.

The school administration has the right to designate which types of dress or appearance disrupt or detract from the educational program and may be a potential safety hazard.  Parents will be called if students are inappropriately dressed and asked to bring a change of clothing for their child.

HOMEWORK

The purpose of homework is generally to provide practice and reinforcement for skills taught at school.  Consideration is given to a child’s outside activities, so homework is usually not assigned on weekends or holidays and is not given as a punishment.  Homework will be assigned to all students   Monday through Thursday of each week.  Teachers may send the entire    week’s work on Monday rather than daily.  Generally, time spent on homework should not exceed:

Kindergarten
15 minutes
Grades 1 – 2
20 – 30 minutes
Grades 3 – 4
30 – 45 minutes
Grade 5
45 – 60 minutes

Please check your child’s homework daily to ensure neatness, accuracy and completeness.  If you have concerns about your child’s homework or lack of homework, please contact your child’s teacher at 799-8680.

ATTENDANCE

In keeping with our efforts to do the utmost for our students, we believe regular school attendance is essential. Mendoza’s school improvement goal for student attendance is 95%.  Each child receives the maximum benefits from regular daily sequential instruction.  We urge you to assist us in accomplishing our goal to increase student attendance.

Elementary students are expected to attend school 180 days each school year.  Of course, children cannot attend school when they are ill, but there are few other reasons for absences.  When a student is absent from school, the parent should notify the teacher in writing or verbally of the reason for the absence within three days.  When your child is absent from school and needs his/her homework assignments, please contact the teacher and make arrangements for the work.  Teachers must have prior notice in order to prepare make-up work for a student.

MENDOZA BUCKS AND MENDOZA MEGABUCKS

Our Mendoza Bucks and Mendoza MegaBucks are an important part of the school-wide incentive program.  They are designed to provide positive reinforcement for students who:
·are responsible for their behavior and follow school and class rules.
·are respectful and kind to others.
·are reliable in completing all class work and homework in a timely manner.

Teachers should explain how the students earn Mendoza Bucks the first week of school.  Mendoza Bucks will not be indiscriminately issued to students for regular, routine practices but reserved for exceptional behavior or academic performance.  Students are responsible for their bucks.  If lost, they cannot be replaced.  Mendoza Bucks are non-transferable. Mendoza Bucks can be exchanged for a Snack Shack coupon to be used at the Student Store during lunch recess.

The Mendoza MegaBucks are designed to acknowledge the whole class for a job well done.  These will be issued to the classroom teacher by the specialists, administrators, and other staff members who observe students in the classroom, hallways and/or lunchroom displaying exemplary Mendoza behavior.

SCHOOL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

The following are provided through the school lunch program:

Breakfast

$ .80

Lunch

$1.40

Milk

$ .25

A lunch menu will be sent home with students each month.  Applications for reduced or free meals may be obtained from the cafeteria or the office.

Students are encouraged to buy lunches in advance for a week or a month and will be credited with the number purchased.  Send a check or cash in a sealed envelope to the cafeteria on Monday morning for your child’s lunch.  Write your child’s name and homeroom teacher’s name on the outside of the envelope. Credit will be given when your child is absent.  Meals may also be purchased on a daily basis.

If a student forgets or loses his/her lunch money or for some other reason has no lunch money or bag lunch, he/she will be allowed to charge a lunch.  Any student who needs to charge a lunch will be allowed one (1) charge only.  If a student has one charge and no lunch money, s/he will be given a cold tray and milk for lunch.

If your child has a special medical need regarding diet (allergies, etc.), please inform the Food Service Staff and school office in writing.

Please make sure your child has a packed lunch or money for lunch each day.  Students learn best when they are not hungry.

Parents who wish to bring lunches for students will be directed to leave the lunch on a designated table in the multipurpose room.  Parents will need to label lunches with their child’s name and students will need to check the table if they are expecting a delivered lunch that day.  Students will be discouraged from going to the office for lunches or calling home to check on their lunch delivery.   Unfortunately the office or lunchroom supervisors will no longer be available to deliver lunches to students.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

If a physician has prescribed medication for your child, to be taken during the school day, a form must be obtained from the office and completed by the parent or guardian.  This record is kept on file in the school health office and gives permission for authorized school personnel to administer the medication.  Do not send the medication with your child.  Parents or guardians must bring the medication to school along with the authorization form.  Non-prescription medication, such as aspirin, may not be dispensed by school personnel.  Students should not bring over-the-counter medication to school.
