Here's some important information about our school's namesakes, D'Vorre and Hal Ober.
D'Vorre and Hal were chosen as our school's namesakes because of their devotion to community involvement and to children.
D'Vorre and Hal Ober were both born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Clark County in 1977.
D'Vorre Ober is a retired CCSD teacher. She received a B.A. degree from the University of Arizona while raising five children. She graduated with a major in Elementary Education and a major in Education of the Visually Impaired. While teaching at Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind, she earned her Master of Education from the University of Arizona in the Education of the Multiple Handicapped.In 1980, she was instrumental in urging the Nevada State Legislature to fund the first infant-preschool program for children who were visually impaired. For the next seven years she developed guidelines and taught these children and their families. Since her retirement, she has served in an advisory capacity concerning young children with visual impairments who are enrolled in the Early Childhood Program.Mrs. Ober is a member of Candelighters, the Women's Division of the Jewish Federation, the Nevada Association for the Handicapped, and is on the advisory board for the Las Vegas Academy. She is a board member for the Interfaith Student Center at UNLV and the University Medical Center Foundation.
Hal Ober has been a major builder/developer in Las Vegas. Mr. Ober has developed nearly 30 communities, including the Desert Shores Master-Planned Community in the northwest Las Vegas Valley. He served as a board member of the National Association of Home Builders and the Nevada Home Builders. He also served as board member and past president of the Southern Nevada Home Builders. In addition to his business accomplishments, Mr. Ober has been a tireless contributor to the community. He was appointed by the Governor to the Nevada State Environmental Protection Commission for nine years. He has served on the Clark County Capital Improvements Committee, Nevada Development Authority, and numerous committees for planning and growth issues in the city of Las Vegas and Clark County. Mr. Ober served on the CCSD Bond Oversight Committee and committees to raise funds for two school bond campaigns. He has co-chaired the construction committee for Nevada Association for the Handicapped. He served as past chairman for St. Jude's Ranch for abused Children. Mr. Ober serves on the Board of Directors and is past president of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas. In 1989, he was honored by B'Nai Brith as "Man of the Year."
Mr. and Mrs. Ober have five children and thirteen grandchildren. Their son, Scott, was principal at Wengert Elementary School, and opened Ober Elementary School in 2000. Their daughter, Jami Gan, is a consultant and interpreter for the hearing impaired at a school district in Tucson, Arizona. |
