Students are qualified and selected for the IBMYP using the following process:
1. A blind qualification process is used for all applications. All identifying marks are removed from the progress report, including, but not limited to, name, student number, school, teacher, etc. and is assigned a number for cross-referencing. This maintains an applicant's anonymity and promotes fairness.
2. All applications received by the deadline are considered equally. there is no preference given to applications completed early, more than once, or qualified with a higher score.
3. Qualification: The IBMYP is given a rigorous selection process. All applications are given points for grade point average, attendance, citizenship (behavior) and the Nevada Criteria Reference Test (Nevada CRT) reading and math scores. A total score is determined and only then is the cut-off score decided upon.
4. A student is marked on the CCSD magnet database either "qualified" or "not qualified" and only qualified applicants are included in the lottery. No statement is made as to the total score, when the application was received, whether the applicant is a special education student, parents' employment, etc.
5. Three factors can positively affect the lottery of sixth (6th) grade students:
6. The lottery this year is being held on March 16, 17 and 18, 2010. At this time the CCSD computer chooses which qualified applicants will be selected to attend the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program at Roy W. Martin Middle School.
7. Acceptance letters will be mailed from the CCSD Magnet/CTA office during the fourth (4th) week of March. This year they plan on having them mailed on March 31, 2010. These letters can be any one of the following three letters:
8. A list of accepted students will be sent to the school and registration packets for the next school year will be mailed out to incoming students at that time.
9. Every applicant not qualified for the IBMYP has the right to appeal the decision. This appeal process typically includes applicants with excessive, or excused, absences due to illness, etc.; inaccurate information used for qualification; or extenuating circumstances which the applicant believes affected his/her negative qualification.
This process begins by contacting the magnet theme coordinator at Martin Middle School and filling out an IBMYP Parent Appeal form. Any supporting documents (physician's notes, accurate information, etc.) are attached to this form. The appeal is then taken to the Martin Middle School principal where the form, supporting documents and initial application is reviewed with the magnet theme coordinator. The final decision is made by the principal. The principal can either approve or deny an appeal. If approved, the principal can also place the applicant directly in the program or given him/her preferential status in the alternate pool.
10. Late applications are accepted until the second week in September. Any qualified late application is used when all qualified applicants on the alternate pool list have been notified and offered a seat and there are remaining open seats in the IBMYP.
