The
IBMYP promotes the education of the whole person, assisting students
in reaching beyond traditional school subjects by helping them realize
that most real-world problems require insights gained from a variety
of disciplines. It provides a framework for developing links between
subject groups and between the subjects and real -world issues so that
students will learn to see knowledge as an interrelated whole. The
program also builds organizational skills and prepares students for
advanced study in high school, and beyond, by utilizing IBís
Areas of Interaction.
Through the first Area of Interaction, Approaches to Learning, students
are taught how to learn and evaluate information critically. Personal
thoughts and ideas are recorded daily in studentsí Process Journals
and studentsí Apple laptop computers allow information to be
easily accessed in every subject as needed. Human Ingenuity encourages
creativity through collaborative and multiple-subject projects which
include Science Fair, Famous Landmarks, and Living Museum. Community
and Service introduces students to working for others in their community
and students complete a required number of service hours every year.
Health and Social Education discusses how students can keep their bodies
healthy, along with having healthy relationships with both family and
friends. Lastly, Environment illustrates different ways to take care
of our planet, while explaining that many resources are not renewable
and must be conserved by everyone.
Students develop intercultural awareness by encouraging each of them
to consider the point of view of someone else in their same class,
along with a genuine understanding of their own history and traditions.
Opportunities for students to build understanding and respect for their
own and othersí social, national, and ethnic cultures are also
provided. The program places fundamental importance on achieving a
firmer command of the English language and on the acquisition of a
foreign language for effective conversation so that multiple forms
of expression can be used in understanding and respecting all cultures.
Adolescents are constantly confronted with a vast and often bewildering
array of choices. The IBMYP gives students the values and opportunities
enabling them to develop sound judgment, by challenging their own personal
values while utilizing the learner profile. This profile is aimed at
developing internationally-minded people who, recognize their own common
humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, while helping them
to create a better and more peaceful world. IB learners strive to be:
inquiring, knowledgeable, thinking, communicative, principled, open-minded,
caring, risk-taking, balanced and reflective.
