Biography and Duties

Mrs. Friel was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and has lived in
Las Vegas since 1980. She earned her Bachelor’s and her Master’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Mrs. Friel has a wonderful husband Jim, and two outstanding sons, Anthony and Andrew. Some of her hobbies
include running and swimming.

Mrs. Friel serves as our principal. She has the primary responsibility for the educational programs and goals of Grant Sawyer Middle School.


Biography and Duties

Mrs. Kocinski was born in Toledo Ohio. Some of her degrees earned: B.S. in Special Education, Bowling Green State University, M.A. in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, University of Phoenix, Master of Arts in Education, Educational Leadership, from UNLV.  She’s lived in Las Vegas since 1997. She enjoys football, spending time outdoors, and playing with her son and daughter.

Heather Kocinski serves as our assistant principal. She works closely with the principal to implement and supervise our programs.


Biography and Duties

Mrs. Childress was born in Chicago, Illinois, and has lived in Las Vegas for 18 yrs. She earned her B.A. in Communications from the University of Louisville, Kentucky; Masters in Special Education
from UNLV; and Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She lives with her husband, Ron, and daughters, Jaila, Kristian, and Kayla. Mrs. Childress enjoys listening to Gospel
and Jazz music, reading, writing and shopping. 

Mrs. Childress serves as the Dean of Students. The Dean maintains discipline in accordance with district and school policies and procedures. The Dean also serves as an intermediary between students and teachers involving disciplinary action in the classroom. The Dean conducts parent/guardian conferences designed to improve the behavior of students. Students’ safety, attendance, locker, and transportation concerns are referred to the Deans’ office.

Please be advised that students and parents/guardians are encouraged to notify any administrator of any concerns or suggestions for improving the quality or nature of instructional and extracurricular programs at Grant Sawyer Middle School.
