What is the Sierra Vista golf team all about?
Participation in the golf program is a privilege, not a right. The athlete must earn this privilege through commitment, desire and discipline. Without the pursuit of these, an athlete can, in no way, do justice to herself or the school. The athlete must discipline herself to be a good citizen and student in order to achieve success in golf. The coaching staff at Sierra Vista High School believes that the tradition of winning is established and maintained on these principles. This determines the course of action for the pursuit of athletic achievement and character training of young people that will be understood and agreed to between the school, the student/athlete and the parent/guardians.
When is the girls’ golf season?

Is transportation for the golf team provided?
Sierra Vista High School and the Clark County School District do not provide transportation for golf teams. We will work together to assure that all team members will have transportation to practice and matches. All parents and athletes are to complete the waiver form to allow teammates or parents to transport athletes to practice and matches. At no time will the coaching staff be allowed to transport athletes.
What is a practice like?
Practices will be held at Siena during the season Monday through Thursday, excluding tournament days. Golfers need to arrive between 2:30 and 3:00, meeting on the practice tee/green. Players will spend appropriate amounts of time working on their skills at the practice green, chipping area, and practice range. Practice play is determined on a daily basis by the course manager and so pick-up transportation needs to be flexible. The use of cell phones for team communication is a tremendous help during practice as the facility is quite large.
It is expected that players schedule private lessons on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays.
Can fans and parents attend practice?
No. Team practice time requires mental focus and an environment free from outside pressures. Players tend to put enough pressure on themselves. Parents who wish to work with their daughters on the game must find time outside of the team practice time.
Can fans and parents attend tournaments?
At most courses yes! Spectators may follow the players at a distance after signing the NIAA Conduct Waiver. Spectators may not have verbal contact or provide any type of coaching at any time. Courses that allow spectators may require golf carts to be rented or require spectators to walk. Each course has its own dress code also.
The Sierra Vista coaching staff encourages spectators to call each golf course to find out their rules regarding spectators.
What are tournaments like?
Six (6) players determined by the head coach will compete in the eighteen-hole tournaments, using five (5) scores for the team score. All seven (7) of the teams in the Sunset Southwest Region will compete in these tournaments (it may be necessary for participants to be excused from a few classes on tournament days). USGA rules govern all play except when modified by local course rules. The rule of “double par” will be used during regular season matches to keep appropriate speed of play. Coaches may only coach between holes, and spectators may follow the players at a distance after signing the conduct waiver.
Where can I get an athletic packet?
In the Athletic Office in the gymnasium at Sierra Vista High School or download it here. When you turn it back in you will need to pay an annual $10 athletics fee.
Do players get to use golf carts?
No. Players must walk while playing. On some courses, including Siena, coaches may transport players where there are great distances between green and tee box. If a cart is used for this purpose, safety requires players to be seated inside the cart (standing on the back of a cart is NOT permitted).
Do team members need to have their own set of golf clubs?
Yes. Sierra Vista does not provide golf clubs.
What are the costs to play/be on the team?
Each season, each player will be required to pay $100. This cost covers the items the players will keep: Team Jersey, Team T-Shirt, etc.
What type of equipment does Sierra Vista provide its golfers?
Team uniforms, a golf bag, golf balls and tees (limited), and other items donated or purchased through our team sponsors.
Can I be on the team even if I am not very good, am just learning how to play, or have never played before?
Yes. Every golfer must start somewhere and this team is a good place to develop and improve your skills. Practice play and tournament play may be limited to experienced team members.
Where can I get golf lessons?
There are many places that offer lessons. Many Sierra Vista players attend lessons with Siena’s Teaching Professional:
Kim Dolan, PGA Teaching Professional
Kim has spent that past 19 years teaching golf in the Las Vegas area. His philosophy is to help you achieve your individual goals. He will identify your needs and capabilities and structure a lesson plan specifically for you. He stresses the fundamentals of golf and tries to make your time spent on the lesson tee enjoyable, productive and most of all, FUN!
Lessons are by appointment and you can schedule either a series of lessons or individual lessons in either a private or a group setting. Kim can be reached Tuesday-Sunday at 702.808.8126 (cell) or 702.363.1110 (home).

Do team members to do any fundraising?
Fundraising is a small part of our program but vital, as we receive minimal funding from CCSD. The funds raised will be used for entry fees, travel expenses, team equipment and awards. It is expected that all golfers will participate in at least one fundraising opportunity.

Can I have a job or play another sport during the golf season?
Team members shall not obligate themselves to a job that in any way interferes with practice or competition. Student/athletes should keep in mind their commitment to the program, the coach, and most importantly to their teammates.
It is against the rules of the NIAA to participate in more than one sport per season. Golfers that compete in both high school and non-high school matches during the season must not exceed eighteen total 18-hole matches.
Can golfers get college scholarships?
Thanks to Title IX and the relatively low cost for colleges to offer a girl’s golf team, there are many opportunities for girls of varying ability level to earn college scholarships. It is not the goal of this program to get players scholarships, but we will assist those who take the initiative to seek them.
