Second Semester

Mr. GeryeSecond Semester has started, and it won't be long until we are handing out diplomas to our seniors. As we begin a new semester, please sit down with your student and evaluate what he/she has/has not done this past 18 weeks, and set some goals for the rest of the year.

It remains the Mission of Spring Valley High School to: "prepare all students for post secondary education." To do this, we need your help and support.

As you can see from our chart, we are sending 84% of our graduates to some form of post-secondary education, a number that compares well with other schools in neighborhoods with many more resources. Returning graduates are reinforcing the fact that they were well-prepared to take on the rigors of post-high school study. The value of education beyond high school is clear in the U.S. Department of Labor Report link that shows how unemployment DECREASES with education.

It's never too early to begin the conversation, especially in light of our economy, about college or training beyond high school. The opportunities and dollars will not magically appear during the senior year! Of course, we are ALL here to help you should you have questions or need direction.

We have a great school and a great community of students. Here's to a great 2010 for everyone of us!

Sincerely,

Bob Gerye
Principal

Parents of current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders

Pre registration will take place for students on Wednesday, February 10th. Please be sure your students attend school that day so they can get their teacher recommendations for the core classes and they can select their elective choices.

The 2010-2011 Course Catalog is now on the Spring Valley website (see the link). Be sure to check out the offerings and make your selections carefully.

Reminder: Unless the class is described as a semester course, ALL classes are year long classes and students are expected to remain in them for the entire school year.

Instructions for Pre-Registration Day
February 10, 2010

February 10, 2010, will be our pre-registration day for the 2010-2011 school year.  Students will see all their teachers that day to receive recommendations for next year’s course placement.  Prior to the February 10th pre-registration day, please make sure you talk to your students about the classes that they would like to take as well as their post-secondary plans.

Students/teachers will use a 3part pre registration form.  Students are to be responsible for this NCR sheet.  They will receive it in the AM Guidance class and are to have all copies with them when they return to the PM Guidance class at the end of the day.  Please make sure that they know how important it is that they complete the form accurately and return it to their mentor teacher at the end of the day.  This form will determine their courses for the following school year. Students will bring two copies of the mentor form home to parents on February 10th.  Please review the form carefully and sign off in the appropriate places.  Keep one copy and instruct your student to bring the other copy to their first period teacher on February 11th.

If you disagree with the recommendation of the teacher, you may challenge the course you’d like by indicating in the course challenge section of the form.  If you choose to challenge, your student will be required to stay in that class for the full school year, so be sure this is what you wish to do.

Please make sure that your students have completed the elective choices IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE.  If the student does not have any electives chosen, he/she will be placed in courses based on availability.

**Please Note:
Students who are absent on 2/10/10, will be completing the registration during individual meetings with counselors beginning the week of March 1st.

Flu Season Precautions

In light of the upcoming flu season and as a precaution, we are reminding parents and students about the measures they can take to keep themselves healthy and safe. First, good and frequent handwashing is the best precaution. Second, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, as the virus is spread through droplet transmission. If a tissue isn't available, cough or sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands. And lastly, if your child has a temperature of 100 or greater, they must stay home. They can return to school after they have been fever free for 24 hours, without the use of fever medications (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc). If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 799-2580, extention 4020 or access the Southern Nevada Health District website.

Thank you!

Athletic Facility Safety and Security Policy

No student is allowed in any athletic facility at anytime without the direct supervision of their coach. This includes the gyms, the gym foyer, the locker rooms, the weight room, the football, soccer, baseball and softball fields, the coaches offices, the concession stands or the ticket booths.

Students are allowed to be in the gym for the purpose of meeting with the Athletic Trainer, but must return to the supervision of their respective coach as soon as they are finished with the trainer.

Signs are clearly posted at all entrances to the gym, locker rooms, gym foyer, coaches offices, concession stands, ticket booths and weight room.

Any student violating this policy will be subject to disciplinary measures according to CCSD and SVHS policies and regulations.

Have the "sext" Talk

Here's a scary new statistic: One in five teenagers say they've sent or received "sexts"-sexually explicit cell phone messages or photos.

*Talk about it, even if you don't think your teen is doing it.

*If your child receives a sext, instruct them to tell you immediately so you can write down the number.

*Explain that sexts can be seen by friends, enemies, teacher, even police-and that sexting may be a crime.

*Agree on a maximum number of text and photos your child can receive a week.

*If your child doesn't abide by your rules, alter his or her cell phone plan to limit text messaging.

*Share a news story as an example.

DELIVERIES TO STUDENTS

Classroom disruptions are kept to a necessary minimum.  Because of this, deliveries to students cannot be made during class.  Please be sure your child is prepared for school when he/she leaves home.  Balloon arrangements or bouquets are considered an educational distraction in the classroom and a safety issue in the hallways and cafeteria.  Such arrangements may not be delivered to school.  If they are brought on campus, they will be held in the Deans’ Office until the end of the school day, where they can be retrieved.  If they are not retrieved by 2:00pm, they will be disposed of.

F Troop Meetings

The Clark County School District is divided into 7 school board districts. Each district is given a letter designation from A to G. Your school sits in School Board District F. My name is Carolyn Edwards and I am the Trustee for District F.

I want to welcome you all back to school for the 2009-2010 school year. I hope this year will be a very rewarding year for you and your children, filled with high levels of learning, achievement and fun. Every month, during the school year, I hold a meeting called the F-Troop (for District F). These meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend. They are held at different schools within District F each month. A vast amount of information is provided at these meetings, so I hope you will attend as many as your schedules allow.
