Flu Season Precautions

In light of the upcoming flu season and as a precaution, we are reminding parents and students about the measures they can take to keep themselves healthy and safe. First, good and frequent handwashing is the best precaution. Second, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, as the virus is spread through droplet transmission. If a tissue isn't available, cough or sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands. And lastly, if your child has a temperature of 100 or greater, they must stay home. They can return to school after they have been fever free for 24 hours, without the use of fever medications (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc). If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 799-2580, extention 4020 or access the Southern Nevada Health District website.

Thank you!

School Nurse

Athletic Facility Safety and Security Policy

No student is allowed in any athletic facility at anytime without the direct supervision of their coach. This includes the gyms, the gym foyer, the locker rooms, the weight room, the football, soccer, baseball and softball fields, the coaches offices, the concession stands or the ticket booths.

Students are allowed to be in the gym for the purpose of meeting with the Athletic Trainer, but must return to the supervision of their respective coach as soon as they are finished with the trainer.

Signs are clearly posted at all entrances to the gym, locker rooms, gym foyer, coaches offices, concession stands, ticket booths and weight room.

Any student violating this policy will be subject to disciplinary measures according to CCSD and SVHS policies and regulations.

Have the "sext" Talk

Here's a scary new statistic: One in five teenagers say they've sent or received "sexts"-sexually explicit cell phone messages or photos.

*Talk about it, even if you don't think your teen is doing it.

*If your child receives a sext, instruct them to tell you immediately so you can write down the number.

*Explain that sexts can be seen by friends, enemies, teacher, even police-and that sexting may be a crime.

*Agree on a maximum number of text and photos your child can receive a week.

*If your child doesn't abide by your rules, alter his or her cell phone plan to limit text messaging.

*Share a news story as an example.

Swine Flu Information

Dear Students, Families, and Staff:

The safety of our students and staff is very important.  At this time, there are no reported cases of swine flu in Clark County.  You have no doubt heard the recent news stories about swine flu (influenza) currently affecting several states, Mexico, and other countries.  The Clark County School District is working with the Southern Nevada Health District to monitor the situation locally.  We will provide updates when additional information becomes available.
At this time, we are recommending that everyone practice good health habits to limit or avoid the spread of swine flu and other illnesses:
How to help prevent the spread of flu

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.  Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.
  • Sneeze or cough into a tissue, elbow, or sleeve.  Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.  Germs spread that way.
  • If you are sick, stay home.

Symptoms of swine flu

  • Similar to typical, seasonal influenza, symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue.  Some people also have reported diarrhea and vomiting.

If you or your child is showing mild, flu-like symptoms monitor them closely and contact your health care provider, if necessary.  You can also contact your school nurse for information.
Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by influenza viruses.  People do not normally get swine flu.  The current outbreak is caused by a swine influenza virus that is contagious and is spreading from human to human.  It is spread like more typical influenza – through coughing or sneezing. For more information, visit http://www.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org , or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, http://www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/investigation.htm.

DELIVERIES TO STUDENTS

Classroom disruptions are kept to a necessary minimum.  Because of this, deliveries to students cannot be made during class.  Please be sure your child is prepared for school when he/she leaves home.  Balloon arrangements or bouquets are considered an educational distraction in the classroom and a safety issue in the hallways and cafeteria.  Such arrangements may not be delivered to school.  If they are brought on campus, they will be held in the Deans’ Office until the end of the school day, where they can be retrieved.  If they are not retrieved by 2:00pm, they will be disposed of.

F Troop Meetings

The Clark County School District is divided into 7 school board districts. Each district is given a letter designation from A to G. Your school sits in School Board District F. My name is Carolyn Edwards and I am the Trustee for District F.

I want to welcome you all back to school for the 2009-2010 school year. I hope this year will be a very rewarding year for you and your children, filled with high levels of learning, achievement and fun. Every month, during the school year, I hold a meeting called the F-Troop (for District F). These meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend. They are held at different schools within District F each month. A vast amount of information is provided at these meetings, so I hope you will attend as many as your schedules allow.
