AVID Mission at Spring Valley High School
The purpose of the Spring Valley High School AVID program is to restructure the teaching methods of an entire school and to open access to the curricula that will ensure four-year college eligibility for “students in the middle.”

What is AVID?
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an academic, regularly scheduled, international college preparatory elective class based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaboration. The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities.

AVID Student Expectations & Responsibilities
(as outlined in the contract)
1. Maintain an academic GPA of 2.5 or higher.
2. Maintain satisfactory citizenship (no “N” or “U”) and attendance (90%) in all classes.
3. Maintain an AVID binder with required paperwork.
4. Complete all class and homework assignments and commit to at least two hours of homework every night.
5. Maintain enrollment in college preparatory courses, including Honors and AP classes.
6. Attend after school tutoring sessions if any grade in any content area course is a “C” or below.
7. Attend AVID events as scheduled, including field trips and student/parent meetings and/or activities.
8. Participate in at least one school or community club/activity.
9. Uphold and abide by the SpVHS standardized dress code.
10. Complete a learning portfolio at the end of each academic year.
