The dual language immersion component began in kindergarten in the school year of 2002/2003 and in each consecutive year one grade level will be added to the immersion program for the acquisition of a second language.  The students will be bilingual and bi-literate by the end of third grade.  

GOALS OF THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM

Develop social and academic competence in two or more languages.

Direct exposure to a variety of cultural settings through academics, and the arts.

Instruction emphasizes high academic performance in all core subjects areas based on district, state, and national standards.

Students have opportunities to communicate in a variety of ways to different audiences.

PROGRAM CONFIGURATION

Daily, in grades K-4, students will receive 140 minutes of instruction in English and 140 minutes of instruction in Spanish.

 Daily, in grade 5, students will receive 60 minutes of math, language arts, science and social studies (English instruction) and 60 minutes of language arts (Spanish instruction).

 During instruction delivered in Spanish, teachers utilize the components of Highly Qualified Sheltered Instruction (HQSI) in order to assist and enhance the students’ understanding of the content. Teachers also focus on vocabulary development and building background knowledge pertaining to the content.
